Winter School 2024: A Warm Collaboration Between Bali Tourism Polytechnic, University Of Groningen, And Bandung Institute Of Technology

On June 18, 2024, Bali Tourism Polytechnic will welcome 103 participants of the 2024 Winter School, held as part of a collaboration between Bali Tourism Polytechnic, the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, and the Bandung Institute of Technology. Participants from various countries, including Spain, Malaysia, Malta, Italy, Australia, Belgium, France, Turkey, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Indonesia, come to Bali to study the vulnerability of communities on small islands, especially around Bali, to environmental changes such as soil erosion and threats to the coastline. They will also identify local economic potential and infrastructure that can support environmental conservation and discuss the challenges faced by communities in dealing with environmental disasters. The program aims to enable participants to design disaster response plans for tourism in remote areas and plan sustainable coastal area management strategies. The Winter School activities will be divided into two sessions, namely lectures and field activities.

Lectures will be delivered by lecturers from ITB, Bali Tourism Polytechnic, RMIT University, Groningen University, and Universiti Sains Malaysia. In the field session, participants will visit Penglipuran Tourism Village, Melasti Beach, and Lembongan Island. They will be divided into groups to discuss topics such as coastal area management, disaster resilience, sustainable tourism, community engagement, well-being, and happiness. With this approach, participants are expected to gain broader insights into sustainable area planning and design, including demographic, socio-economic, and tourism activity aspects. The BiTP Global Unit, which handles international cooperation at Bali Tourism Polytechnic, coordinates this activity together with the Public Relations Unit, Hotel Practice Unit, and several Study Programs, such as Tourism Destinations, Hotel Management, Travel Business, and Convention and Event Management. Lecturers at Bali Tourism Polytechnic, such as Dr. Luh Yusni Wiarti, Dr. I Putu Utama, Dr. I Gede Darmawijaya, and Dewa Ayu Made Lily Dianasari, are involved as mentors and facilitators in this activity. Students of Bali Tourism Polytechnic are also actively involved in the welcoming process, mentoring, and participating as participants. Kamala Resort, a practice hotel owned by Bali Tourism Polytechnic, will be the official accommodation during the Winter School 2024. Through this activity, it is hoped that Bali Tourism Polytechnic will be increasingly recognized in the world as a center of excellence in cultural tourism, as well as strengthening global cooperation in the development of science in the fields of tourism and hospitality.
